Ministry of Education launches Fathiyyeh Nasru Award for Educational Research

In memory of Dr. Fathiyyeh Nasru, the Palestinian Ministry of Education launched the Fathiyyeh Nasru Award for Educational Research on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, in collaboration with Birzeit University. The award aims to encourage scientific research in the field of education.

The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, including Mohammad Matar, general director of the Center for Educational Research and Development; Abdul Hakim Abu Jamous, general director of the Humanities and Social Sciences Curricula; and Saheer Qasem, general director of the National Institute for Educational Development. The event was also attended by dean of the Faculty of Education at Birzeit University, Dr. Refa' Al-Ramahi.

Matar emphasized the significance of this effective partnership with Birzeit University, noting that this award represents a qualitative leap in educational research and commemorates the late Dr. Nasru. He also highlighted the significance of employing educational research to provide high-quality education, particularly since the award will address significant topics on the agenda of the Ministry of Education. He further maintained that the theme of artificial intelligence and its application in teaching and learning was chosen for the first round of the award.

Dr. Ramahi commented, “Dr. Nasru was not an ordinary person. She was a scholar, a Palestinian activist, a pioneer in the field of education and a university professor who worked in Palestinian universities and institutes for 55 years. Throughout her career, she worked with high competence to bring about change and elevate the field of education in Palestine.”

She added, “There is no doubt that Dr. Nasru faced significant challenges at various stages of her life. She is well known for her unwavering dedication to the Palestinian cause, contributions to the education sector and her voluntary work in the fields of national education and social development. Everyone who interacted with Dr. Nasru can attest to her deep-rooted commitment to the independence of the Palestinian curricula and the preservation of its national identity.  She is also known for her future-oriented thinking, honesty, her pride in her Palestinian identity and love and passion for Birzeit University, her students and colleagues.”
