Ambassador of Nicaragua visits Birzeit University and meets with its president and students

Thursday, April 18, 2024- Mr. Roberta Morales Hernandez, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua to the State of Palestine, visited Birzeit University and met with Dr. Talal Shahwan, the president of the university, Dr. Yasser Al-Amouri, Vice President for Development and Communication, and Dr. Iyad Tomar, Dean of Student Affairs.

Dr. Shahwan presented a brief overview of the university’s history, and spoke about the violations of the occupation against education in general, and the destruction of Palestinian universities in Gaza Strip in particular. Both parties discussed ways to enhance academic cooperation between Palestinian universities and universities in Nicaragua.

Dr. Shahwan praised Nicaragua’s supportive stance on the Palestinian cause, as it has been a major supporter of the reclamation of our people’s just rights.

The ambassador affirmed the entrenched historical ties between the two peoples and countries, stressing Nicaragua's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its condemnation of the ongoing genocidal crimes against our people in the Gaza Strip.

The two parties discussed means of deepening and broadening the educational cooperation between Birzeit University and the universities of Nicaragua, particularly activating the Memorandum of Understanding previously signed with the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN) to enhance academic and research cooperation and student exchanges between the two universities.

Furthermore, the ambassador met with a number of Birzeit University students where they discussed the political situation, the challenges facing students in Palestine, and future prospects. The students praised Nicaragua's supportive stances towards the Palestinian people. Particularly their recent positions concerning the war on the Gaza Strip.
