Birzeit University’s nine faculties offer various academic programs leading to a Bachelor's degree, in addition to sub-specialties as minors. These faculties also offer a number of Master’s degree graduate programs.

Birzeit University was the first Palestinian university to offer a Master’s degree – it began offering an MA in Education in the 1976/1977 academic year. In the 1990s, it advanced its graduate program with several initiatives. After the closure of the university during the first Intifada, specifically in 1994, it was re-opened for admission to the Master's program in education and the Master's program in International Studies. The late Ibrahim Abu-Lughod initiated this program, hosted by the Institute of International Studies bearing his name. Today Birzeit University offers 29 graduate studies programs, in addition to a doctoral program in social sciences offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
