Birzeit University organizes workshop for small and medium-sized enterprises on low-cost spatial reuse methodology
On August 6, 2023, the Department of Architecture and Planning at Birzeit University conducted a training workshop in Hebron under the title “Proximity and Spatial Re-use.”
The workshop covered a diverse range of topics aimed at promoting the concept of low-cost spatial reuse and capitalizing on the economic and environmental opportunities it offers. The workshop featured specialized lectures, interactive discussions and practical exercises covering various subjects, including the concept of Low Cost Adaptive Reuse practices (LCARS) with regards to sustainability and circular economy, circular economy strategies applied in the design of projects based on spatial reuse, the assessment of economic feasibility of spatial reuse projects, circular supply chain strategies suitable for spatial reuse projects and best practices and guidelines for low-cost reuse of buildings.
The workshop garnered significant interest from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Participants expressed their satisfaction with the content, discussions and active engagement throughout the event.
At the end of the workshop, the participants issued recommendations highlighting the need to promote low-cost spatial reuse. The recommendations also underlined the significance of fostering innovation and sustainable design to achieve sustainable development in the old city, while preserving its architectural and cultural heritage.
Organized as part of the Capitalization for Re-setting Innovation and Sustainability in Med-Cities (CARISMED) project, these educational activities aim to inspire environmental conservation and resource optimization through sustainable approaches. The workshops also aim to emphasize the importance of spatial reuse as an impactful means of cost reduction and sustainable development.
