Birzeit University Mourns Friend, Supporter Marwan Bachi

Birzeit University mourns the loss of Syrian artist Marwan Qassab Bachi, who contributed to the establishment of Birzeit University Museum’s art collection in 1997. He passed away on October 23, 2016.

Bachi presented his exhibition “To the Children of Palestine” that toured in several Palestinian cities, including Jerusalem, Gaza, Bethlehem and Ramallah. Marwan then decided to keep his works in Palestine, as a gift resembling his symbolic and constant presence here, the land that he loved and carried in his heart and mind while always hoping to visit.

The university remembers him and appreciates his rich artistic experience and historic contribution to the university, which were the nuclei of its artistic collection. His works are shown at Birzeit University Museum in its collections exhibition and are visited by students and the community, giving continual life to Marwan and his works in Palestine.

Marwan Qassab Bachi was born in Damascus in 1934. He studied at Damascus University and moved to Berlin in 1957 to study and advance his artistic career. He spent his life as one of the most appreciated artists in Germany, studied in several universities, including the High Fine Arts College in Berlin, and was a member of the Berlin artistic community.
