Birzeit University launches activities on Low Cost Adaptive Reuse Practices for small and medium-sized enterprises in Hebron

As part of the Capitalization for Re-setting Innovation and Sustainability in Med-Cities (CARISMED) project, a team from the Department of Architectural Engineering and Planning at Birzeit University launched awareness and training activities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the Low Cost Adaptive Reuse practices (LCARS) for abandoned buildings to create a Cloud Cyberinfrastructure Innovation (CCI) Lab in Hebron.

The team will implement three activities over the period of four day. On July 23, 2023, the team will hold a session for networking and clustering. The second activity will take place on July 30, 2023, under the title “Circular, Smart, Green, and Sustainable Practices.” The final activity will be held on August 6 and 13, 2023, under the title “Proximity and Spatial Re-use.”

These workshops aim to raise awareness and provide training for small and medium-sized enterprises in Hebron on the concept of circular economy and the role of creative and cultural crafts in urban settings. The training also aims to develop skills in using innovative methods and tools for capacity building in recycling, promote innovative business models and design solutions that align with the principles of circular economy. Ultimately, the goal is to create a purposeful experimental creative workshop through adaptive low-cost reuses of a selected old building in Hebron city.

The first activity was held on 23 July 2023, and was attended by representatives from the Hebron Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Hebron Governorate, the Hebron Municipality, the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee as well as fifteen craftsmen from various backgrounds.

The trainers tackled various topics, such as clustering and sectoral coordination, studio labs, green building, urban sustainability strategies, smart buildings practices and adaptive reuse of buildings. At the end of the workshop, the floor was opened for discussion between stakeholders, trainers and the Birzeit University team. They explored methods of collaboration between the parties to achieve the project objectives and to facilitate the participation of artisans in the execution of the studio lab.

The CARISMED project is funded by the European Union under the ENI CBC Med program, the largest Cross-Border Cooperation (CBC) initiative implemented under the European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI).
