Birzeit University, Institute for Palestine Studies Organize Gabi Baramki’s Book Launching Ceremony

Birzeit University and the Institute for Palestine Studies organized on June 20, 2015, the book launching "Gabi Baramki Biography and his Odyssey at Birzeit University (1929-2012)." The book was authored by the professor of philosophy and cultural studies Dr. Abdul-Rahim Al-Shaikh. The ceremony was attended by the university president Dr. Khalil Hindi, BZU Board of Trustees members, Palestinian figures, Baramki family members, faculty, staff and students.

In his opening address, Hindi noted that Baramki’s presidency period was the most difficult period in the university life, in which the university moved from boyhood to adulthood. Hindi added: "Gabi Baramki was the spiritual university father, as he dealt with all university staff and workers in a spirit of friendliness and respect, and resolved conflicts in a manner that preserves the freedom of expression and academic freedom. Moreover, Baramki nourished the spirit of resistance and defiance in a period under occupation, which imposed the toughest measures against the university.

Baramki’s wife Haifa thanked all those who contributed to the publication of the book

The Institute for Palestine Studies Director Khalid Farraj, spoke about the importance of the book, since  Baramki was a contemporary author, who lived four historical periods (British Mandate, Jordanian rule, Zionist colonialism and the Palestinian Authority), covering the four historical periods in the history of the Palestinian people.

Al-Shaikh said that work on the book took more than three years, referring to the interviews conducted with late Baramki prior his departure on 30 August 2012. Al-Shaikh added: “The biography began as a "diary" and ended with "a cultural, political and social history of Birzeit University."
