CALL FOR PAPERS

Conference: "75 Years of an Ongoing Nakba: The Question of Knowledge Production"

On its 60th anniversary, and on the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, the Institute for Palestine Studies invites submissions for its annual conference titled: “75 Years of an Ongoing Nakba: The Question of Knowledge Production”.

The conference aims at reviewing scholarly knowledge production on the Nakba and its aftermath and at examining new horizons of research on this pivotal moment in Palestinian history. The issue of the Nakba is not only historical, but one that concerns the present and future of the region, as Zionist discourse not only aims at undermining the memory of the Nakba but also on justifying ongoing policies of dismemberment and exclusion.

The conference will address the following themes through its panels:

Forms of Knowledge Production:

  • Forms of scholarly knowledge production on the Nakba since 1948; pivotal moments in this trajectory.
  • Knowledge production on the Nakba and Palestinian research institutions.
  • Academic disciplines and cultural fields that have examined the Nakba.
  • The impact of language on knowledge production on the Nakba.

Knowledge Production in its Geo-political Context:

  • The history of the Palestinian National Movement and knowledge production on the Nakba.
  • Military, social, political, and historical knowledge production on the Nakba in the Arab world.
  • The impact of geographic location on Palestinian knowledge production.
  • Israeli research on the Nakba and its impact.

The Present and Future;

  • Nakba studies in the digital sphere, political and epistemic horizons.
  • Fields of studies that examine the ongoing Nakba.
  • New archival sources on the history of the Nakba.
  • Cultural and artistic contributions on the study of the Nakba.
  • Challenges facing knowledge production on the Nakba in the Arab and Palestinian contexts.

All scholarly contributions are welcome. IPS welcomes both individual papers and/or organized panel proposals including 4-5 papers. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and can be submitted for blind review in English or Arabic. The deadline for submission is May 2, 2023.
