Students from Department of Architectural Engineering and Planning participate in Algorithm Rome Winter School, Italy

The Department of Architectural Engineering and Planning participated in the Algorithm Rome Winter School at the Academy of Art and New Technology, Italy, between February 12-22, 2023.

Fifteen students from Birzeit University attended the school under the supervision of Ibrahim Al-Hindi, adjunct lecturer at the Department of Architectural Engineering and Planning at Birzeit University.

The school explored advanced ‎digital approaches that enable urban designers, landscapers, researchers and architects to ‎optimize their design interventions on urban scale to enhance ‎urban performance ‎while considering humans and ‎environmental factors.

The students attended scientific lectures on planning and visited historical sites in Rome, Pisa and Florence.

They were divided into groups around the Basilica of Saint Sylvester the First, the Piazza Borghese square and the Colosseum to compete in a case project. Supervised by architects specialized in parametric design, the students collected and analyzed data using software programes including depthmapX, Rhinoceros 7, Grasshopper, Urbano, DeCodingSpaces Toolbox and VisualARQ.

The students presented their recommendations for site development to a jury comprising Dr. Giorgio Ortolani, associate professor of architecture at the Roma Tre University and member of the International Council of Monuments and Sites; Dr. Ali Abu Ghanimeh, professor of Architecture at the University of Jordan; and Piero Meogrossi, engineer and archaeological restoration specialist.
