New agreement provides Salfeet undergrads with funding, scholarships at Birzeit University

Low income students from Safleet, a governorate in Palestine located to the northwest of the West Bank, will now be able to apply for funding to continue their education at Birzeit University thanks to a newly signed agreement with the Salfeet Committee for Solidarity Fund Charity.

Dr. Beshara Doumani, president of Birzeit University, signed the agreement with  Abdullah Kameel, chairman of the fund’s board and governor of Salfeet on Monday, November 1, 2021, to establish a need-based scholarship for underprivileged students from Salfeet. The scholarship would cover the tuition fees of students.

Attending the signing ceremony from Birzeit University were Vice President for Advancement Dr. Ghassan Khatib, acting Dean of Student Affairs Anan Atteereh, Development Officer Laurance Theodory, and Development Coordinator Kawthar Abu Khalil. Osama Musleh, director of the General Authority for Civil Affairs in Salfeet, and Iyad Al-Deek, director of Salfeet’s Social Development Department, were also present at the meeting.

“Partnering with the Salfeet charitable fund allows Birzeit University to offer quality education and life-changing opportunities for even more Palestinian students,” said Doumani after signing the agreement. “The grants, scholarships, and financial aid provided through such agreements constitute an essential part of our efforts to provide quality education for all Palestinians, without regard for their financial backgrounds, and ensure their access to education, a right guaranteed by all international laws and conventions.”

Birzeit University’s strength, stressed Doumani, lies not only in its academic excellence, but also in its commitment to the Palestinian national cause and its engagement with the Palestinian community, whether through justice-driven knowledge production and scholarship or community-based programs and initiatives.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Kamal explained the main goals of the charitable fund, noting that it was created to help disadvantaged students continue their education through scholarships, and economic empowerment .
