The Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation is the first Arab award concerned with scientific research in the Arab world. It was launched in 1982 to promote scientific research throughout the Arab world and to encourage and support Arab researchers, experts and specialists in various scientific fields, considering the limited capabilities of research institutions and universities.

This year, five hundred and five research papers were submitted for the award, one hundred and fifty-five of which were disqualified for not meeting the award criteria. The award honors outstanding scientific research papers that contribute to advancing scientific and applied knowledge as well as to resolving challenges in high-priority local, regional and global areas.

It is worth mentioning that Mustafa Jarrar, a professor of computer science at Birzeit University, was granted the Abdul Hameed Shoman Arab Researchers Award 2019 in Technology for his distinguished research on Arabic computational linguistics.
