Birzeit University launches Social Justice Observatory

Birzeit University launched the Social Justice Observatory on February 13, 2023, to raise social justice awareness; address issues related to discrimination, bullying and harassment; and develop mechanisms to follow up with reported cases.

The Social Justice Observatory is the first of its kind in Palestinian universities. It was initiated by the Institute of Women’s Studies at Birzeit University in conjunction with the Office of the Vice President for Planning and Development. The observatory aims to address and eliminate all forms of discrimination and harassment and create a safe academic atmosphere.

Birzeit University President Dr. Beshara Doumani stated, “The observatory is part of the university’s strategic vision to foster an inclusive atmosphere that celebrates diversity. We have to redefine what is considered political, as addressing social issues is essentially as political as other traditional political practices.”

Dr. Islah Jad, Social Justice Observatory director, asserted, “The observatory aims to monitor all forms of injustice at the university; combat discrimination, bullying and harassment; and adopt the necessary measures to address all forms of violence.”

Dr. Sahar Hassan, member of the Social Justice Observatory Advisory Committee and director of the women’s studies master’s program, maintained, “Birzeit University was a pioneer in introducing programs that examine power relations between men and women. Birzeit University launched the Institute of Women’s Studies in 1994 and the women’s studies master’s program in 1998. This year, Birzeit launched the women’s health master’s program that seeks to enhance research and improve health services provided to women.”

Mayar Sami, student committee representative, affirmed that the committee will coordinate workshops to raise awareness of discrimination and educate students on how to seek help when subjected to any form of violence.
