Birzeit University hosts “Coffins Speak” exhibition that sheds light on violence against women

In collaboration with the Palestinian Youth Association for Leadership and Rights Activation (PYALARA), the Hala Atallah Counseling Unit at the Deanship of Student Affairs hosted an exhibition titled “Coffins Speak” to raise awareness of gender-based violence and femicide in Palestine.

To amplify the narratives of victims, attendees can hear their stories using earphones connected to symbolic coffins.

Samia Hawamda, social advisor at the Hala Atallah Counseling Unit, emphasized the significance of this event in raising awareness of issues that concern the Palestinian society, highlighting the necessity of joining efforts to limit violence.

Hilmi Atwan, communications and outreach officer at PYALARA, stated that, through this exhibition, the organization aims to reach various universities and public places to spread awareness and involve the community in activities that aim to reduce gender-based violence, given that statistics reveal an increase in the rate of violence against women.

This event in part of the “Towards Raising Social Responsibility in the Palestinian Society and Holding Officials Accountable - Unifying Efforts to Combat Violence Against Women” project. Funded by the United Nations Trust Fund, the project is executed by PYALARA in collaboration with the Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counselling.
