The staff of the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies enjoys a high degree of professionalism, competence, innovation and experience, by implementing unique and pioneering development strategies based on the best international standards in full harmony with the Palestinian context.

Sawsan Sayej
Currently is the administrative and financial coordinator at the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies, which aims to contributing to solving the problems of the water and environment sectors in Palestine and the region by providing appropriate academic programs, distinguished research and constructive training programs. She works on the financial management of the externally funded projects. She coordinates with the national institutions pertaining various water and environmental interventions in the water and environment sectors. She coordinates with the students and alumni and organizes different activities that serve the water and environment sectors. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Women and Water Network. She believes in environmental issues and the importance of community awareness in this field, thus changing the behavior of individuals and institutions towards the environment by participating in solving environmental problems, and various awareness programs. Her mission is to preserve the cleanliness of the environment, and its natural resources, an important component of good health, and an address for a conscious society.

 
Dr. Nidal Mahmoud
is a professor at the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Jordan, and master's and doctoral degrees in water and environmental engineering from Dutch universities. He has co-authored and published many scientific papers in refereed scientific journals, local and international conferences, and co-authored a number of books. He led many local and international research projects. He has distinguished contributions in translating water and environmental sciences and engineering from English into Arabic. He is a lecturer in the master's programs in water and environmental science and engineering, former director of the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies, and former head of the master's programs in water and environmental engineering and science. 

Dr. Maher Abu-Madi
is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Birzeit University. He has BSc. Degree in Chemical Engineering and Technology (1989-1993) from the Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University. He has MSc degree in Sanitary Engineering (1994-1997) from IHE-Delft in the Netherlands. He completed his PhD Degree in Water and Environmental Engineering (1999-2004) from TU-Delft and IHE-Delft, The Northlands. He was the director of the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies (2013-2017). He led several research and community development projects, at national and international level.  Dr. Abu-Madi, was the local water advisor to the Netherlands Representative Office in Ramallah. He teaches several courses to the BSc and MSc level, mainly in the fields of water distribution, integrated water resources management, political economy for environmental planners, environmental management for sustainable development, and others. He published several research articles in good ranking journals. He was the first prize winner for the best research in the Arab region by Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils in 2017.

Dr. Issam A. Al-Khatib
A Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees from the Civil Engineering Department, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in September 1993. B.Sc degree from the Civil Engineering Department at An-Najah National University, Nablus, Palestine. Prof. Al-Khatib has experience in a wide range of areas including water recourses management and quality, renewable and sustainable energy, environmental assessment, wastewater management, advocacy, coordination and networking. Al-Khatib has an extended experience in the development and carrying research and evaluation projects, professional work experience in water resources management, environmental impact assessment, environmental monitoring, training and evaluation of medical waste, solid waste, waste to energy, climate change, water and sanitation and urban environment projects. He is an expert in social and environmental health, promoting environmental public awareness through training, organizing and conducting awareness campaigns and workshops in environmental education and health.

Dr. Rashed Al-Sa`ed
Professor of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, is Institute's co-founder and its former director. He headed the two M.Sc. programs in water and environmental science and engineering. His teaching and research areas focus on the removal and utilization of nutrients from wastewater using nature-based solutions and advanced processes, the development and design of smart sanitation facilities, and the recycling of reclaimed water and biosolids in the agricultural sector, EIA, IWRM, ISWM, bioremediation, and EPT. Al Sa`ed published more than 100 scientific and engineering articles including 9 book chapters. During the past 20 years, Al-Sa`ed attracted more than 12 million US$ through the development and management of R&D projects. He serves in various voluntary positions on academic and community service boards and is the co-founder of the local company Global Environmental Services. He currently manages several joint research, development, and advisory projects. Al-Sa`ed holds a Doctor-Engineering degree in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering from Braunschweig University of Technology.
