PalUROP Supporting Student Research in Palestinian Universities

Introduction

The Palestinian Student Research Project (PSRP) is a new venture designed to foster the formation of collaborative research projects involving faculty and students from Palestinian universities and abroad.

This program is modeled on a system in use at MIT and many other US institutions. In its current form, the program is funded by a small grant from the Higher Education directorate of MIT’s Jameel World Education Lab

Some details:

  • Each project must involve a faculty member and at least one student (undergraduate or master's degree, selected by the Palestinian faculty lead) from a Palestinian university and a faculty member from elsewhere (not necessarily MIT or US). Ideally there should be student participation from abroad as well.
  • Student participants will be compensated for their work on the project. The rate of pay is $6/hour up to a maximum of $1000 for a semester. Students will invoice the lead faculty by submitting time sheets, which will be honored through an agreement with Birzeit University.
  • This is a pilot project. We hope to initiate a handful of undergraduate/master’s level research projects this fall and spring.
  • Projects will be approved by the PSRP Committee, with membership specified below. They will be approved on a semester basis but may be extended as appropriate. Deadlines will be proposed but now in this initial phase they will be waived.
  • Scientists for Palestine has generously offered to host the website for this program which will be the place to look for proposals seeking partners, a form for submitting proposals, and reports on accomplishments of past projects (the website is still under construction and will be shared with you soon).

How to apply

For now, and until the website is ready and fully functioning, please reply to this email specifying:

  •  an abstract for a project that you’re interested in working on with student(s) in your department
  •  the name/names of the students you will be mentoring/working on this project with.

All proposal should be sent by email to Dr. Reema Sbeih ([email protected] )

Look through the proposals in this link to get an idea of what information we’re looking for when proposing a new project:

The following link contains what Mohammad Damaj, the first BZU math student to join this project, had to say about his experience working with Professor Miller alongside the other students in the project at the time:
