Abstract
Based on the factthat PV systems are clean, environment friendly, and secure energy sourc
es, PV system installation has played an important role worldwide. PV syst
ems can be classified based on their configuration whereas three main PV sy
stems can be found in field namely standalone PV systems, grid PV systems
and hybrid PV systems. Standalone PV systems are used in remote area for el
ectrifications where such a system is not connected to the electricity grid
. A typical PV system consisting of a PV module/ array, power conditioner
such as charge controller or maximum power point tracking controller, stor
age batteries, inverter, and load. In this presentation, scientific, te
chnical and social issues for standalone PV are reviewed. These issues incl
ude solar cells history and principle, standalone PV system components, s
tandalone PV systems power electronic features, standalone PV system desig
n, reliability of standalone PV systems and opportunities and challenges f
or SAPV in Palestine.
