Adnan Y
ahya is a Professor at the Department of Computer Systems Engineering, B
irzeit University, Palestine.
He received his PhD degree from Northwest
ern University in 1984.
He had several visiting appointments at univers
ities and research centers in the US and Europe
including longer term s
tays at Maryland, Duke, Munich and Koblenz Universities.
Currently he i
s on sabbatical leave at the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced
Computer Studies (UMIACS).
Areas of interest include Automated/Nonmonotoi
nc Reasoning, Arabic NLP and Information Retrieval. Adnan Yahya is a
member of the ACM, IEEE and IEEE-Computer Society.
Abstract:
The talk r
eports on a series of efficiency enhancement tools being developed an depl
oyed to simplify dealing with Arabic Text Retrieval and Processing, also
in a Cross Lingual (CL) Environment.
The tools mainly use a statistical a
pproach and are based on corpora of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
The to
ols discussed utlize the highly annotated Wikipedia as the main infrastruc
ture, both for Categorization and Quality Assessment of Arabic web cont
ent and Cross Language Similarity Metrics.
We outline some of the possibleapplications in Information Retrieval tasks, including categorized spellchecking, CL Plagiarism Detection and for improving the quality of textua
l Arabic Web Content.
Time permitting we give some pointers to other relev
ant ongoing research work.
