ABSTRACT
Surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing devices havebeen seen a tremendous awareness during the last decade both from a fundam
ental physics point of view and as highly sensitive devices for optical bio
sensing of a large number of small biological or chemical entities in gaseo
us and aqueous environments.
Although SPR sensors have the highest sensiti
vity among evanescent waves based sensing techniques, intensive efforts inthe last two decades are done to improve their specificity and figure of m
erit (FOM). One of the prominent features of SPR phenomenon is the electrom
agnetic (EM) fields’ enhancement at the surface, in particular, when SPR
excited in sub wavelength shaped nano particles (NPs). Surface enhanced Ram
an scattering (SERS) as a vibrational spectroscopy based detection techniqu
e can be considerably enhanced due to the excitation of localize SPR (LSPR)in NPs and patterned substrates.
In this lecture, the fundamentals and
principles of SPR sensors as well as the sensing mechanism in some of the m
ost widespread SPR sensors configurations will be discussed. Using sculptur
es thin films (STFs) as substrates for SERS enhancement are also demonstrat
ed.
