Birzeit University ranks as the first Palestinian university in SCImago 2024 rankings

According to The SCImago Institutions and University rankings of 2024, Birzeit University ranked in the first place among 8 Palestinian universities, two of which, The Islamic University and Al Azhar University, were destroyed in the continuous Israeli onslaught on Gaza. Birzeit also ranked 56 among 338 Arabic universities and institutions,104 among 565 in the mediterranean region, and 1819 among 4762 globally; being amongst the first quarter (Q1) of all universities and research institutions.

Birzeit University secured high positions in the fields of Computer Science, Engineering, Social Studies. It ranked first locally, 17 in the Arab region, 32 in the Mediterranean region, and 740 globally in the field of Computer Science. 

This year’s ranking was composed of 9054 institutions from around the globe, 4762 of which are universities. 

It is worth mentioning that The SCImago ranking ranks the different institutions based on an index that follows three criteria on a scale; 50% is allocated to research performance, 30% to creativity, and 20% to societal impact. Each criterion encompasses a number of sub-criteria that measure the scale, quality, excellence, and impact of the research and publications the institutions release.
