Civil Engineering

In the last decade, the structural and infrastructure engineering have witnessed fast development in Palestine. There is a strong association between the structure and infrastructure engineering fields and concepts of sustainability. The design, construction and management are performed according to the sustainability principles in the developing areas, planning urban expansion or studying the built environment.

The program provides a unique integration between structures and infrastructures systems and sustainability concepts. On one hand, structural engineering is the science of analysis and design of physical expansion of built environment, providing complex structures for residential, commercial and industrial occupancies. Furthermore, structural engineering supports the analysis, design and construction of infrastructure components such as bridges, dams, reservoir, etc. On the other hand, the development in infrastructure using modern technology in construction saves the future natural resources for the future generations.

The proposed master program in civil engineering integrates the sustainability pillars of economy, environment, and societal aspects within the suggested courses and study plan. Community resilience is also taken into account through supporting the research related to the mitigation of natural hazards in structural and infrastructure engineering, climate change, and planning and design of better infrastructure. The program enhances the qualification of engineers, increases their opportunity of employment and encourages them to pursue further research. 

The main goal of the program is to provide program graduates with a Master Degree in Civil Engineering. The graduates should have the following:

  • An enlarged integrated and multidisciplinary vision in the planning, design, and implementation of structure and infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced understanding of the state-of-the-art and state-of-practice within selected areas of structure’s and infrastructure’s planning, design and management, and become among the region’s best engineers
  • Professional development and promoting technical accuracy, use of knowledge-based analysis and decision-making, and pursuit of lifelong learning
  • Possess a systematic understanding and knowledge of the recent theories related to the modeling and analysis of structures and infrastructure
  • Plan, develop, design, evaluate and manage complex structural and infrastructure projects considering environmental, economic, societal and ethical aspects   
  • Evaluate and rehabilitate structural components and systems in engineering projects to meet their desired requirements and sustainability needs   
  • Understand the factors affecting the lifecycle of engineering projects in order to achieve the best maintenance and management schemes

Expected work fields for program graduates

  • Governmental institutions: Ministry of Environment, Ministry of transport, Palestinian Water Authority, Palestinian Environmental Quality Authority, Ministry of Local Government and Municipalities, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
  • Engineering and consulting offices
  • Companies that work in housing, transportation and real estate
  • Institutions that work in the area of development
  • Institutions that deal with water, energy, and solid waste issues
  • Academic position as faculty and researchers in universities or colleges

The Master in civil Engineering consists of 36 credit hours. The program comprises of 4 compulsory courses (12 credit hours), 6 elective courses (18 credit hours to be selected from Groups II and III), and 6 credit hours for thesis or two seminars. The student has the option to concentrate in either infrastructures or structures by completing 4 elective courses (12 credit hours) from the relevant course list provided in Group II.
