Winners of Innovation and Entrepreneurship competition to develop working prototypes

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit at Birzeit University has announced the names of the 10 winners of its recent innovation competition, which was held on July 18, 19, and 21, 2018.

Organized in partnership with the Higher Council for Innovation and Excellence, the three-day competition included student projects in various areas such as technology, agriculture, medicine, and energy. The winners will receive $5000 from the council for development of working prototypes of their ideas.

Manager of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit George Yerousis said that the competition is part of Birzeit University’s push toward fostering a spirit of development and innovation at the university, and that this is the first of a proposed annual competition, which will be held in cooperation with the Higher Council for Innovation and Excellence.

“This competition fits neatly within our vision that is built on student-led innovation,” noted Yerousis. “It’s one of our many projects and programs that emphasize student leadership and social initiatives, such as the Leadership and Active Citizenship Program – Masari – whose final stage, the Social Entrepreneurship station, encourages students to help their communities in unique and creative ways.”   

The winners are:

  • Ameen Taha, TullabCo, a student-led platform that offers student- and academic-services;
  • Aya Shbaita, Kids Zone, a project to manufacture creativity-enhancing toys for kids;
  • Mariana Msallam, Pharma New Leaders, 3D printing of standardized medicine pills;
  • Mohammad Allan, Zafft, Co, recycling of scrap tires into floor tiles;
  • Mohammad Issa, Lenscharm, a mobile shopping application that allows users to share and review products in using virtual-reality technologies;
  • Mutasem Shraitah, Sufian Al Zayn, and Omran Abu Kubar, Green Tires, recycling of scrap tires;
  • Nourah Abu Laban, Aya Hamayel, and Abdelrahim Mousa, Smart Stick for Blind People, a stick that aids blind people in traversing their environments;
  • Razan Diab, Medico, a mobile application that allows users to request medications for delivery and home nursing services;
  • Asem Itani, Coal Processing, eco-friendly coal-production processes; and
  • Wisam Al Tell and Firas Abu Sharakh, Lower Limb Rehabilitation Robot, a process by which a robotic apparatus exercises and heals damaged lower limbs.
