Students relive experiences of female detainees inside Israeli prisons in Right to Education film screening

“3000 Nights,” a 2015 Palestinian film that portrays the everyday experiences of female Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli prisons, was screened on October 23, 2021, in an event organized by Birzeit University’s Right to Education Campaign.

The film, which was the Jordanian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, was directed by Mai Masri. It presents portraits of female prisoners during the 1980s, exploring their journey of hope, resilience and survival inside Israeli interrogation and detention centers.

The Right to Education Campaign has recently begun holding regular screenings of  Palestinian films that highlight the struggle of living under a brutal military occupation. These films are especially relevant to Birzeit University’s community, who are usually the target of arbitrary mass detention, arrests and other widespread and systematic human rights violations that severely undermine access to education.

In the past two years, six female Birzeit University students were detained in Israeli prisons, sentenced in unfair trials held and presided over by members of the Israeli military. Four of them were released (Layan Kayed, Layan Nasir, Elia Abu Hijleh and Mais Abu Ghosh), and two (Shatha Taweel and Ruba Assi) are still imprisoned.
