Students gain first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of the European Union

Dr. Dencho Georgiev, a professor of law and criminology at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, gave two lectures at Birzeit University as part of a visit to the campus that took began on April 2 and lasted until April 6, 2018. 

During the visit, which was part of the Erasmus+ staff mobility program, Georgiev gave two lectures: one at the Faculty of Law and Public Administration, in which he introduced students to the laws and history of the European Union, and detailed the problems hindering enforcing such rules across the bloc’s 28 member states. 

Gergiev, a legal authority who has written on the World Trade Organization trade dispute system, state cooperation and sovereignty, and international economic integration, also lectured law students on the pivotal role that the institutions of the EU play in lawmaking and enforcement. 

Banking on his experience as the Bulgarian representative to the European Parliament, a position which he held for two years, Georgiev addressed the formulation, drafting, acceptance, and execution of laws in the European Union in a second lecture co-organized by the Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies. 

Georgiev also met with Dr. Amir Khalil, the external academic relations officer at Birzeit University, who explored with the visiting professor channels of academic cooperation between Birzeit University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, especially in law training and staff and student mobility.
