Student lounge opens at Birzeit University

Birzeit University President Dr. Beshara Doumani and Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Iyad Tumar launched a student lounge on January 10, 2023 to develop the university’s public space. The lounge offers a space for students to engage in cultural, intellectual and creative activities.

The student lounge spans 600 sq. meters and offers an open, vibrant area for students to gather, study and relax between classes. It is equipped with comfortable furniture, chessboards and table tennis, along with a study hall to provide students with an academic and intellectual atmosphere.

In a speech, Dr. Doumani maintained that the student lounge reflects the identity of Birzeit University as a national university underpinned by principles of pluralism, diversity and openness. He added, “Birzeit University strives to develop the university’s facilities to accommodate student activities and promote academic excellence, national commitment and community engagement.” Dr. Doumani concluded his speech by thanking engineer and businessperson Omar Abdul Hadi for his generous donation and support for the project.

Dr. Yasid El Rifai, vice president for campus development, asserted that the lounge falls within Birzeit University’s strategic plan to create spaces that allow for positive interactions between different constituents of the university and encourage the production of knowledge.

Dr. Tumar stressed that Birzeit University strives to enhance student social life on campus and further community engagement. Later, he encouraged students to engage in university activities and clubs and make use of the university’s facilities and spaces.

The launch was attended by students, faculty members, employees and members of the University Council, the Student Council and the Student Movement.
