Student bloc representatives adopt social media guidelines

Guidelines call for respect, brevity, and authenticity

Representatives of the student blocs, the Public Relations Office, and the Deanship of Student Affairs met to discuss and agree on the guidelines for social media use during Birzeit University’s Student Council elections, which are set to begin their 2018/2019 cycle on May 7, 2018.

Attending students and representatives said they wanted to expand the discussions with more specialized workshops in the future. Such workshops, the students further added, should focus on rhetorical skills and media skills and bolster their ability to express and defend their opinions on social media platforms in ways that can drive the democratic process forward.

One of the recommendations pushed by the attendees is the adoption of the guidelines as one of Birzeit University’s official policies, making the university the first to take such a step, preserving its democratic atmosphere and engaging the students’ freedom of speech and expression.
