Social sciences doctoral program hosts discussion on heritage, reconstruction with visiting heritage studies professor

Feras Hammami, an assistant professor of critical heritage studies and urban planning in the Department of Conservation at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, led a seminar on heritage, conflict, and peace-building on March 27, 2019, on Birzeit University’s campus. 

Organized by the Ph.D. program in social sciences, the seminar − titled “Reconstructing Spaces: Protest, Memory and Discourse” − focused on the politicization of cultural heritage and its entanglement in the politics of identity and memory with discussions centered on Hammami’s experiences in Gothenburg. 

The seminar was part of International Staff Training Week, organized by the External Academic Relations Office, in which the university hosted academics and representatives of a number of universities from around the world for a series of events, seminars, and discussions related to international cooperation, the Erasmus Plus framework, and student- and faculty exchange and training programs.
