Session Informs on PHOENIX Project and Scholarship Opportunities

Birzeit University’s External Academic Relations Office held an information session on the Erasmus Mundus Action2, Strand 1-PHOENIX project on December 19, 2013.

The Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Strand 1 partnership for Lot 2 (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine) PHOENIX project aims to develop a structured mobility-based cooperation among three Palestinian (Birzeit University, An-Najah University and Islamic University of Gaza), two Lebanese, one Syrian, and two Jordanian higher education institutions on the one hand, and nine EU higher education institutions on the other. This cooperation network aims at supporting students from all levels (undergraduate, Master and PhD), academic staff, researchers and administrative staff to gain experience, expertise and skills through interaction in an international environment.

Students, faculty members and staff attended the session. A short video was presented, followed by a presentation by Dolly Kaibni-Nammour, director of Grants and Contracts/External Academic Relations, on the goals of the project, partner institutions, target groups, types of mobility, and admission requirements, as well as required documents. At the end of the session, a discussion was held with audience participation.

PHOENIX offers 150 scholarships for all types of mobility, 36 of them available to Palestinian students. These scholarships will give the chance for students and staff members to complete their higher education studies and get training in specific thematic fields identified by the project partners in line with regional and national priorities. Thus, Lot2 students will be able to pursue their master’s or PhD degrees at the EU partner higher education institutions to enable them to meet labor market needs and serve their local communities professionally. Furthermore, researchers from all consortium members will have the opportunity to meet together to conduct research on common problems and concerns.

The dates for applications are December 2, 2013-January 22, 2014.
