Official Statement by Birzeit University

Birzeit University reaffirms its commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression and vibrant democracy. These values are solidly entrenched in the university's policies that are applicable to all students, faculty and staff.

The university conducts students' elections annually. Our students are in this way prepared to participate in a diverse democracy and engage with wide-ranging perspectives based on liberal values. As such, militarization and direct and indirect acts of violence on campus are prohibited, as they hinder our democratic academic mission and values.

The university is committed to hold the Students’ Council elections annually, in line with its strong belief in democracy and freedom of expression and assembly. However, we constantly assures in our policies and regulations that militarization is not allowed during the elections or any other event on campus.

Birzeit University has launched an Ethical Code of Conduct that applies to all students. The code commits students to the highest ethical standards in furthering the university's mission of teaching, research, and public service. It identifies the university's core values as respect for freedom of expression and the right to free speech, forbidding all violent acts or credible threats of violence. Students, staff or faculty shall not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, disability or gender in carrying out educational programs, activities, and daily-life interaction.

No event shall infringe upon the rights or privileges of anyone not in sympathy with it, and no one will be permitted to harm others, damage or deface property, or disrupt anyone's right to life.
