Meeting defines validity of Palestine's legal system on preventing corruption

The prevention and combating of corrupt activities in Palestine was the focus of the symposium held by The Faculty of Law and Public Administration at Birzeit University.

The Dean of the faculty Yaser Amouri talked about the importance of addressing this issue in higher-education institutions as it is part of its role of its awareness activities in cooperation with civil society institutes.

He pointed out that this joint symposium with The Coalition for Accountability and Integrity (AMAN, aims to highlight the role of civil society institutions in combating corruption, and assessing the compatibility between the relevant Palestinians legislations with the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

The BoD Amman's consultant Azmi Shuaibi assured that the lack of a transparent and direct mechanisms to combat corruption leads to corruption itself. The civil society organizations, according to Shuaibi, have a strong role in encouraging individuals to combat corruptions.

He pointed out the idea of transparency and accountability which was first introduce in the Palestinian legislation council in 1997, alluding g to Aman's role in fighting this critical phenomena through issuing reports and studies that seek to contribute in the policy making procedures.

Aman's legal adviser Bilal Barghouthi talked about the legal framework of which Palestine has to combat corruption. He assured that it is not enough and complete. In addition, Bargouthi pointed out the Code of Conducts that the civil work organizations are only theoretical and are not practical and realistic.

Professor of Public Administration in Birzeit University Ayman Zarou talked about the role of Palestine's Audit and Administrative Control Bureau in fighting corruption, assuring that its regulations are not implemented in real life. Zarou emphasized on the need of having a strategy that tackles the errors that we have in our legal system and work on correcting them.
