Local governance professor participates in meeting on city development and environment
Birzeit University, represented by Jihad Al Ayaseh, director of the master’s program in government and local government, participated in the second meeting of UCLG-MEWA, the Middle East and West Asia Section of United Cities and Local Governments organization, focusing on development cooperation, city diplomacy, and the environment. The meeting was held in Ramallah on April 15 to 17, 2019.
Representatives discussed issues related to Sustainable Development Goals that aim to fight climate change and to bolster city diplomacy and environmental urban resilience. Al Ayaseh presented a research paper on the application of sustainable development under the political, economic and environmental challenges that are prevalent in Palestine.
The meeting was attended by Mousa Hadid, mayor of Ramallah, president of the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA), and co-president of UCLG-MEWA; Mehmet Duman, UCLG-MEWA secretary general; Adalah Al Atireh, president of the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority; Laila Ghannam, governor of Ramallah and Al Bireh; and Consul General of Turkey in Jerusalem Hüsnü Gürcan Türkoğlu.
