Lecture introduces role of forensic medicine in legal procedures

Birzeit University’s Law Department held on April 8, 2017 a lecture on the practice of forensic science in examining physical evidence collected from the scene of crime. The lecture was presented by the director of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at An-Najah National University, and the head of the Public Prosecution in Ramallah and Al Bireh Luai Shamyeh.

Al- Ali assured that a good cooperation with a forensic medicine expert that can ensure a correct, fast and successful investigation.

“A forensic doctor may have significant contribution to assist justice to investigate criminals and human rights issues. Forensic science starts by recognition and recovery of evidences at crime scene. It proceeds by apply scientific analysis of those evidences and to present the findings to the justice.”

Al Rayan said that there are physical objects that can be traced in the crime scene and are considered as evidences against the criminal. He talked about the forensic medicine in Palestine, pointing out to its development and relevance to the judicial system.

Shamiyeh emphasized on the interactive relationship between the forensic medicine and the judicial bodies, and their role in the process of investigation.

The panelists at the end of the lecture emphasized on the importance of endorsing a solid Palestinian law that regulates the tasks of forensic medicine, in addition to establishing an independent body to  protect the doctors, investigators and the judicial bodies.
