International Migration and Refugee Studies master’s program hosts international experts online, concludes Politics of Migration and Asylum course

The International Migration and Refugee Studies master’s program hosted international academics and researchers online to explore asylum and policies of exclusion and inclusion in Egypt and Jordan as part of the Politics of Migration and Asylum course.

Dr. Amira Ahmed, assistant professor of anthropology and social development at the American University of Cairo in Egypt, investigated migration in Egypt, while Dr. Oroub El-Abed, regional lead researcher at the Centre for Lebanese Studies in Jordan compared migratory patterns between Egypt and Jordan. Dr. Raed Eshnaiwer, researcher at Birzeit University’s Center for Development Studies and part-time professor at Bethlehem University, examined humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees in Jordan.

This colloquium concluded the Politics of Migration and Asylum course, which hosted 15 local and international experts from Jordan, Turkiye, Algeria, Sudan, Syria, Switzerland, France, Lebanon, Egypt, the Netherlands and the U.S. in online seminars to address asylum and migration in law, political science, international relations, history, sociology and philosophy.

The course was supervised by Dr. Rashad Twam, legal advisor and researcher at Birzeit University, and Mai Laila, teaching and research assistant in the International Migration and Refugee Studies program.
