ILO, Birzeit University Discuss Social Security System

The International Labor Organization’s representative in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Samir Klaibo, accompanied by regional expert for social security in the Arab States, Ursula Kolecki, visited Birzeit University on November 1, 2014, and met with president Khalil Hindi. The international organization’s delegates presented proposal for a social security system for those working in the Palestinian private sector. The system is supported by the International Labor Organization through intensive work with its social partners and the Palestinian government, under the umbrella of the National Authority for Social Security.

The meeting was attended by the Vice President for Administrative Affairs Adel Zagha, Vice President for Community Outreach Samia Halaileh, Director of Human Resources Mohamed Abdel-Mohsen and Faculty of Business and Economics dean Yousef Daoud.

The two sides discussed the proposed national social security system for private sector employees in Palestine, compared to other existing systems, including the university’s system currently in force. Klaibo also confirmed the formation of mini advisory and legal committees to work on  preparing the first draft of the First Social Security Law in Palestine to be completed before the end of 2014.
