Global Teacher Prize Winner Speaks in Women’s Participation Lecture Series
Palestinian teacher Hanan Hroub, winner of the prominent global teacher prize spoke at Birzeit University, on March 23rd, 2016, in a lecture series organized by the Deanship of Students Affairs, focusing on women’s experiences and successes.
University President Abdel Latif Abu Hijleh met with Hroub before the lecture. Abu Hijleh congratulated Hroub for winning the prestigious prize and said “ Educators are integral to the success and continued growth of our system of education. We strive to raise awareness of the crucial role of education in all societies, and create a platform for embracing innovation and modern practices that might help alleviate some of the challenges which education faces around the world.”
“By working daily to educate Palestine’s children; Hroub made and will continue making significant modifications to their teaching methods and therefore affect the quality of education that students receive”, Dean of Students Affairs Mohammad Al Ahmad stated. “ We commend the passion and desire to education that Hroub has. We are certain that with this passion, the educational process would take a whole different direction.”
“A child has the right to play”, Hroub told the students. “ The environment outside the classroom is violent. So inside, I try to provide peace, harmony and security to my students. I often war a clown’s wig and red nose, use games to get children to work cooperatively in teams, building trust and respect and rewarding positive non-violent behavior.”
“ This award will encourage me to further improve and enhance my teaching techniques and inspire others through focusing on play as a learning tool and shunned violence”, Hroub concluded.
Hroub was named last week as the winner of an award described as the Nobel prize for teaching, out of a field of 8,000 candidates and a final shortlist of 10 from the US, the UK, Japan, Australia, Finland, Pakistan and India.
