Exhibition on Social and Cultural Perceptions Concluded

Al- Jensanyeh Forum and Birzeit University Department of Social and Behavioral Science successfully concluded the 1st edition of Sama Gallery Exhibition: Our Stories and Beyond.

“Our Stories and Beyond” exhibited the work of a number of female students as part of a course they took about the definition of gender and sex in the Palestinian Society. Students developed their photography skills and worked with the professional photographer, Mohammad Badarneh, to enhance their ability to reflect reality.

“Birzeit University Department of Social and Behaviroal Sciences is concerned with the study of how human beings think and behave, both as individuals and in social, spiritual and cultural settings. Our goal is to empower our student to utilize the knowledge they’ve gained from us and be the key to transform sociological stereotypes - Visual arts and exhibitions are key towards change”, chairperson of the department of social and behavioral science said.

These cultural events challenged the students to reflect deeply on the many ways our values relate to gender and sex-related issues such as violence, harassment, adolescence problem and so on,” exhibition coordinator Hazem Abu Helal said. The publicity from the Forbes list provides an opportunity to enlighten a misinformed world public opinion, not only on how powerful certain female individuals in the Gulf have become, but also on the influence they increasingly exert on the political landscapes of their countries “This exhibition questions how contemporary perceptions and gender stereotype intersect with our culture, which we seek to change.”

“Gallery Sama is keen to provide a free, public space that displays the work of young artists, and also serves as a platform to reflect on the many ways values and perceptions intersects with a society’s culture”, Abu Helal added.
