Dr. Abaher El Sakka Participates in the Seventh Conference on Social Sciences: “Destruction, Imagination, and Knowledge”
Dr. Abaher El Sakka, Professor of Sociology and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Birzeit University, took part in the Seventh Conference on Social Sciences, titled “Destruction, Imagination, and Knowledge: Regional Turns and Global Echoes”, held in Beirut, Lebanon, from May 15-18, 2025. He represented Birzeit University at the second meeting of the Network of Arab Universities, which aims to foster cooperation among academic institutions in the Arab region. He was delegated to attend by the university president, Dr. Talal Shahwan.
Dr. El Sakka delivered a talk titled “Academic Freedom in Today’s World” during the roundtable “Safeguarding Academic Freedom: The Role of Institutions,” and he moderated another roundtable titled “Resilience, Struggle, and the Future.” He also served as a discussant in a roundtable on “Energy, Pipelines, and People: A Just Energy Agenda for the Arab World.”
Additionally, he gave a presentation honoring the work of the late Dr. Sharif Kanaana, who was recognized by the Arab Council for Social Sciences. Dr. El Sakka accepted the award and honorary membership on behalf of Dr. Kanaana’s family and presented the award to his daughter Salwa Kanaana. In the closing session, he made an intervention titled “Ongoing Return and Ongoing Nakba.
