China Language Institute Discussed at Ambassador’s Visit

Birzeit University President Abdel Latif Abu Hijleh and the Representative of China to the State of Palestine Ambassador Chen Xingzhong discussed on March 15, 2016 ways of cooperating in academia and cultural exchange.

Both parties agreed on the importance of establishing mechanisms for greater cooperation in fields of mutual interest such as educational and cultural exchange.

“International activity is an important component of Birzeit University’s strategy. We are keen on enabling our academic staff and students to be globally active and well-prepared for future challenges. We are committed through international engagement to enhance the accumulation of knowledge to offer high quality education,” Abu Hijleh stated.

Abu Hijleh said he is interested in finding ways to revive the idea of establishing a Confucius Institute that will teach the Chinese language to students, offer cultural teaching resources and services to Palestinians, and contribute to the development of multiculturalism.

“China has always had an intimate relationship with Palestine,” Xingzhong assured. “Our government believes in the power of education, expanding cross-border academic communication, cultural exchange and expertise to enable young generations to contribute positively to their local communities.“

The meeting was attended by Vice President for Development and Communication Ghassan Khatib, Vice President for Academic Affairs Henry Giacaman, External Academic Relations Officer Dolly Kaibni-Nammour and Dean of Student Affairs Mohammad Al-Ahmad.
