Birzeit University’s students form their Student Council

Eleven committees are allocated per a proportional representation basis

Birzeit University’s Student Council has been formed according to proportional representation of the votes cast in the 2018 Student Council elections. The council was formed in a meeting with representatives from the Deanship of Student Affairs, as well as Dr. Mohammad Al Ahmad, the dean of student affairs, held on Monday, June 4, 2018.

Al Wafaa’ Islamic Bloc, which won a majority of the seats in the most recent elections, formed six committees: The Presidency, held by Yahya Rabi’; the Public Relations committee, held by Shatha Hassan; the Health and Environment committee, held by Sa’ida Za’arer; the Academic Majors committee, held by Mohammad Iqbal; the Sports committee, held by Wa’d Fuqaha; and the Community Engagement committee, held by Mohammad Al Khateeb.

The Martyr Yasser Arafat bloc was able to form five committees, which are the Financial committee, held by Saif Rayyan; the Social committee, held by Nicola Qawwas, the Art committee, held by Shahla Hab Al Reeh; the Culture committee, held by Aseel Faqih; and the Cafeterias committee, held by Ammar Abu Obaid.

Mohammad Al Omari, a representative of the Martyr Yasser Arafat bloc, was elected as President of the Student Council Conference.

“The blocs form the Student Council per the number of votes they gained in the elections. The number of seats gained by each bloc is divided by the number of seats each committee has, and the committees are then formed on a proportional representation basis,” said Al Ahmad.

Birzeit University’s 2018 Student Council elections were held on May 9, 2018. Al Wafaa’ Islamic Bloc won 24 out of 51 seats, the Martyr Yasser Arafat bloc got 23 seats, and the Democratic Progressive Student Pole claimed 4 seats.
