Birzeit University takes the lead in annual “IEEEXTREME” Competition

Birzeit University won first place among Palestinian competitors, 42 among the region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) , and 125th internationally in the annual “IEEEXTREME” competition, held by the the world's largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)

The participants in this competition are students of Electrical and Computer Engineering at hundreds of universities around the world. The number of the participating teams has reached 3,350. The teams competed in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of real-world programming problems.

Students’ Coordinator at IEEE Dr. Abdel-Karim Awad said that thirteen teams from Birzeit University participated in the annual competition. “Five teams were recognized as the best top five among national teams and 125th among international participants.”

The Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Birzeit University Muhammad Hussein expressed his pride in the students’ skills and talents that were reflected in the competition’s results. Hussein, who is the coordinator of the Competitions’ Committee at the Department, stressed the fact that, “Despite our limited resources, Birzeit was able to compete with international competitors.”

The Head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Jasser Saed pointed out, "The IEEE competition placed us in a competitive atmosphere that really pushed us to work more on nurturing our students’ skills to foster innovation and creativity within the university and our local community.”

IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE Student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE member. The IEEE Student Branch at Birzeit University is sponsored by Experts Turnkey Solutions.
