Birzeit University Successfully Complete Fellowship Program

Birzeit University professors Khaled Talahmeh and Hani Shtayyeh recently finished research visits to international universities as part of the fellowship program for academic and professional development launched by the Bank of Palestine in partnership with the Welfare Association.

Talahmeh was on a one-year research visit to Columbia University, during which he conducted a study entitled, “Conventional bonds and Islamic bonds (sukuk): Towards a new financing system."

"It was a unique experience because it combined both academic and research aspects,” Talahmeh said, “and opened my horizons to participate in a number of law conferences and meetings that were organized by the Faculty of Law at Columbia University. This visit gave me the opportunity to meet with legal researchers and experts from around the world, as we exchanged ideas and experience, especially in Islamic bonds."

Shtayyeh of the Birzeit University Faculty of Nursing, Pharmacy and Health Professions finished a two-month research visit to Ghent University in Belgium, as he participated in research and lectures on how to use modern technologies in the pharmaceutical industry.

Talking about his time in Ghent, Shtayyeh said, "My experience in Belgium was outstanding and useful, as professors and experts were very helpful.”

Both Talahmeh and Shtayyeh expressed their thanks to the Bank of Palestine for supporting Birzeit university professors and their interest in developing education in the Palestinian universities. They also thanked the Welfare Association for its follow-up during their fellowship.

Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and program coordinator Wael Hashlamon said that this fellowship program is a national academic long-term partnership with the Bank of Palestine, which started with Birzeit University and moved to other Palestinian universities.

Hashlamon encouraged university faculty members to apply for the fellowship program, which opens the way for professional visits and technical training for two months up to one academic year in priority sectors in Palestine, including IT, finance and banking, health and medicine, agriculture, environment, engineering, law, life Sciences, humanities). Hashlamon noted that third session applications are being accepted until September 28, 2014.
