Birzeit University Represents Palestine in US Study Tour of Water Management

Professor Marwan Ghanem from the Birzeit University Geography Department participated in a travel program to the US to look at management of water resources in the Middle East and the United States. Ghanem represented the State of Palestine and Birzeit University on the study tour from March 15 - April 5, 2014.

"The program aimed to identify ways and means of protecting the land, vegetation degradation and water from pollution,” Ghanem said. Representatives of Jordan, Iraq, Yemen and Algeria also participated in the program.

Visitors attended lectures on water and wastewater, environment and agriculture, as well as toured scientific research institutions in American universities and institutes located in the states of Washington, Maryland, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada and California.

Field visits also included the US Geological Survey, the largest wastewater treatment plant in the world located in Washington DC, and a visit to a salt water desalination plant in Texas.
