Birzeit University Ranks 44th Internationally, 1st among Arab Countries, in the Washington International Law Competition
The Birzeit University Faculty of Law and Public Administration team ranked 44th internationally and first among Arab countries in the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition held recently in Washington, DC. The team was composed of three students from the Law Department, Areej Rajaby, Celine Asmar and Mira Araj, and supervised by law faculty members, Renad Abdullah and Yaser Amoury.
Faculty Dean Asem Khalil said that the contest rewarded the excellence of the team, which already won the right to represent Palestine in the competition among 114 international teams from different countries.
The 2014 competition marks the 55th year of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 550 law schools in more than 80 countries. The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case. Thousands of law students from around the world have worked all year long on this year’s Jessup theme, which is mainly the conflict between maritime development and conservation, criminal jurisdiction, and maritime salvage rights.
