Birzeit University offers 40 scholarships for new science majors

Beginning with the 2018/2019 academic year, Birzeit University will offer 40 competitive scholarships for incoming undergraduate students who attained an average of 90 percent or more on the tawjihi and wish to enroll in programs offered by the Faculty of Science.

The scholarships cover the full tuition costs of selected students for their first year of studies, said Dr. Khalid Swaileh, dean of the Faculty of Science. Students who enroll in programs offered by the faculty’s four departments – Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology and Biochemistry – while meeting the requirements will be automatically considered for the scholarship, which will be awarded on an academic-merit basis.

“There is a global trend in which students are moving toward practical majors, such as engineering, and shying away from more abstract majors, such as science,” observed Swaileh. “By offering these scholarships, we hope to incentivize students to pursue scientific disciplines, and attract bright-minded students to these majors.”

In the 2017/2018 academic year, over 40 percent of Birzeit University’s students were beneficiaries of student aid, which totaled $5.9 million in the academic year 2015/2016.
