Birzeit University Leads Palestinian Universities in SCImago 2025 Global Rankings

In a new achievement reflecting its academic and research excellence, Birzeit University has once again secured the top position among Palestinian universities in the 2025 edition of the SCImago Global Rankings. The university also earned high rankings at the Arab, regional, and global levels, placing within the top quartile (Q1) of universities and research institutions. These results underscore the university’s commitment to quality education and innovation in scientific research.

Birzeit University ranked first locally among the eight Palestinian universities listed in the ranking, including the Islamic University and Al Azhar University from Gaza. At the Arab level, the university secured the 66th position out of 362 universities and educational institutions, while ranking 117th in the Middle East among 585 institutions. Globally, Birzeit University placed 1,962nd out of 5051 universities listed in the overall ranking.

The university also secured high positions in the fields of computer science, mathematics, environmental sciences, and social sciences. In computer science, Birzeit University ranked first locally, 35th among Arab universities, 51st in the Middle East, and 959th globally. In mathematics, the university ranked 57th among Arab universities, 94th in the Middle East, and 1,168th globally.

This year’s ranking was composed of 9,756 research institutions across various disciplines, 5,051 of which were universities from around the globe.

It is worth mentioning that SCImago is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked by a composite indicator that combines three different sets of indicators on a scale; 50% is allocated to research performance, 30% to innovation, and 20% to societal impact. Each indicator encompasses a number of sub-indicators that measure the volume, quality, excellence, and impact of the research and publications the institutions release.
