Birzeit University Holds Conference for Graduate Student Research

Participants in the Palestinian conference for graduate research in pure and applied sciences emphasized the need to focus on research conducted by students, including undergraduate students, and finance, facilitate access to books and scientific journals, and support research infrastructure. These were the conclusions of the conference held by the Birzeit University Faculty of Graduate Studies and Faculty of Science on March 22, 2014.

The participants also recommended the holding of conferences for students’ research in Palestine on regular basis, in order to give them the opportunity to present their achievements and to exchange their expertise. Palestinians universities, it was agreed, should provide local universities with training opportunities at advanced overseas laboratories and research centers.

The conference was sponsored by National Insurance Company and Wataniya Mobile Company, and under the silver sponsorship of Al-Quds Bank and Dar Al Shifa Pharmaceutical Industries. It was attended by Birzeit University President Khalil Hindi, Ministry of Education and Higher Education representative Fahoum Shalaby, faculty members and students of Birzeit University and other Palestinian universities.

Vice President Henry Giacaman opened the event, asserting that Birzeit considers scientific research of great importance at both the faculty and student levels.  Giacaman added that the university has provided an opportunity for undergraduate students to present their research projects – a leading initiative on the local level - believing in the need to encourage and consolidate students’ research trends.

Shalaby underscored the conference as opening the doors to students to present their research and achievements, to interact and discuss with researchers and expert. Shalaby said, "Whoever finds in his scientific research an innovative and distinctive flavor that may lead to a scientific and applied product, is invited to apply to the ministry’s Department of Scientific Research to obtain the ministry’s reinforcement and support."
