Birzeit University commemorates World Diabetes Day

In acknowledgement of Birzeit University’s role in raising awareness of public health, the Student Affairs Office organized an event to mark World Diabetes Day in collaboration with the Augusta Victoria Hospital and the Faculty of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Professions on November 21, 2022.

The events aimed to raise awareness on the impact of diabetes on society, assist patient management of the disease and provide information on methods of treatment and prevention.

The events included friendly matches, recreational activities, interactive discussions, educational booths and a mobile clinic offering free diabetic foot tests and retinal examinations. The events also included a competition for the best football commentators, where students who were ranked first received prizes.

World Diabetes Day was launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization to raise awareness and combat the rise of diabetes around the world. It is held annually on November 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.
