Abaher El-Sakka Presents Several Lectures at French and Belgian Universities on Palestinian Reality and Gaza Genocide
Abaher El-Sakka, Associate Professor of Sociology and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Birzeit University, delivered a lecture series as a visiting professor at several prestigious universities in France and Belgium.
El-Sakka started this series with a lecture at Sorbonne University in Paris titled “What Can Sociology Do in the Face of the Gaza Genocide?”. In the lecture, he discussed the role of sociology in analyzing and dismantling the mechanisms of genocide and colonial violence. He also explored ways to engage critically with such realities from academic and human perspectives.
He also delivered a lecture at the University of Dijon in France, titled “Palestinian Society after October 7th.” In it, he addressed social and political changes in the Palestinian society following the last events, highlighting internal dynamics and growing challenges.
At the Université libre de Bruxelle in Belgium, El-Sakka presented a lecture titled “Gaza: A City in the Face of Destruction and Reconstruction.” In this lecture, he reviewed Gaza’s urban and social history and illustrated how repeated destruction processes have been part of a prolonged attempt to dismantle the Palestinian urban spaces, countered by persistent efforts at rebuilding and resilience.
During his visit to Sorbonne University, El-Sakka also participated as a visiting professor in the master’s program, where he presented several lectures specialized for higher education students. These lectures focused on themes of collective memory, identity, and political sociology within the Palestinian context.
