December 18...World Arabic Language Day

Celebrating World Arabic Language, Birzeit University has organized a number of activities commemorating this day. The university believes in the importance of recalling  the Arabic Language, and emphasizes on its contribution towards the future of Arabs, their identity and culture.

The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used by more than 290 million people, and in the diversity of its forms, classical or dialectal, the Arabic language has given rise to many sciences, productions of arts and literature.

Therefore, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has declared that December 18 is a day to celebrate the Arabic language, similar to other languages. The UNESCO acknowledges the importance of maintaining world cultural heritage, especially in Arabic as it has an immense contribution to scientific progress and the universal culture.

Preserving Arabic at Birzeit

The linguistic search engine and the Arabic ontology contains the world’s largest Arabic lexical database, which is a non-profit, long-term research project that aims to provide people with an innovative tool to find translations, synonyms, and definitions in all domains and disciplines.
