A course focusing on historical issues in Arabic and Near Eastern Music and its relationship to society and other art forms. It will highlight the early writers on music in Persia, the Arab World, Andalusia and Byzantium, and a study of the historical material available including theses and theories on modal systems, instruments and the emotional/spiritual effects of music.
