EDUC4303 | WORLD ENGLISHES

This course will explore the following main topics thoroughly: the role and status of English in the world today, the historical reasons for the spread of English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, standard and non-standard forms, pidgins and creoles, native, ‘non-native’ and ‘nativised’ varieties, ‘writing back’ ‘non-native’ literatures, linguistic and sociolinguistic descriptions of different varieties of English, with reference to grammatical, phonological, lexical and socio-pragmatic features, the ownership of English and the development of English as an international lingua franca.
